WIFI Project: Dunkirk
Havant, England, United Kingdom
The situation for refugees in Northern France is very severe. People are living in horrid, desperate conditions in the fields and woods of Dunkirk in Northern France.
The French State is actively depriving people of any infrastructure or support that would enable even basic Human Rights. The lack of sanitation, safe living conditions and legal support is deplorable. Not to mention the fact that in Dunkirk and Calais, people are chased, tear-gassed, pepper sprayed, and assaulted throughout the day and the night; their make-shift shelters and possessions routinely destroyed.
In spite of police harassment and dwindling aid resources, French and English Associations like Refugee Community Kitchen (RCK), Help Refugees and Utopia 56 are currently providing food and material aid to approximately 2000 people around Calais and Dunkirk.
Due to legal battles lead by aid groups, certain aid distributions points have become crucial ‘safe spaces’ where people are able to exist with a greatly lessened fear of police violence and brutality whilst volunteers are present. There is one such space in Grande Synthe where around 500 people have access to hot food and limited material aid twice a day.
There is, however, no provision for Internet access, and due to police harassment in the local towns, it’s not as easy as going to a cafe to Skype family, read the news, listen to music, learn more about asylum process or figure out where to go next. I want to set up a mobile WIFI system and work with a collective of volunteers who will provide tea, information and a generator for phone charging with the goal of enabling 100 people at a time to have Internet access for 3-5 hours a day.
Initial costs for the router, aerials, and control unit (to be secured on the mobile charge van) are £700. Mobile data will cost an estimated £40 a week. The campaign target of £1500 will pay for the initial set up and 5 months of mobile data.
Please donate whatever you can: even a little will buy enough data to Skype home, let loved ones know that you are alive and well, or WhatsApp a friend. I am also looking for sponsors who can commit towards the weekly runnings costs. If you are interested in becoming a long-term sponsor or if you have any questions or advice, please contact me on [email protected].
